GRAND HOTEL, BIRMINGHAM

1/6

Diagnosis

It was a great privilege to work on this prestigious Grade II* hotel which had been closed for many years and on the English Heritage Priority Heritage at Risk List. The building had been under scaffold for 15 years and was in a poor state due to a combination of factors including poor maintenance. The 13 under-pavement vaulted areas that Stonehouse were invited to waterproof were part of new retail spaces planned to make the whole building viable once more.

Solution

Within strict conservation guidelines, we installed a reversible Newton cavity drain membrane waterproofing system which drained into existing gullies in the lower basement area. This was a fast-moving building site and our operatives were challenged by complicated detailing and ongoing modifications - the cavity drain system is extremely versatile. We had previously worked with this architectural practice in Oxford.
